ABOUT ABEL

The Alliance for Biotherapy Education and Leadership (ABEL) is an educational consortium formed in 2023 by Commonwealth Transfusion Foundation in Richmond Virginia in partnership with Blood Assurance, Inc. in Chattanooga Tennessee.

SBB PROGRAM

The ABEL SBBT/TM Program provides comprehensive and in-depth training in all aspects of blood banking: blood collection, blood component manufacturing, immunohematology, specialized serology, molecular testing, transfusion medicine practice, quality systems, process control, education and research, leadership, and management.

 

The ABEL SBB/TM program is a 12-month distance-learning program beginning in August of each calendar year. Graduates of the program are awarded a certificate of completion and are prepared to take the ASCP Board of Certification examination for SBB certification. Important note: Until ABEL is fully accredited by CAAHEP, students must qualify for the certification exam based on Routes 2 – 7.

​Students who successfully complete the ABEL SBB program with a grade average of at least 80% may be eligible for course credit in the University of Texas Medical Branch Master of Science in Transfusion Medicine program. Visit www.utmb.edu for more information.

PROGRAM GOALS

Students in Specialist in Blood Bank Technology programs are educated to become competent entry-level SBBs with adequate knowledge, skills, and professional appreciation for Blood Bank Technology. Successful students will:

​

  • Develop technical and supervisory competencies in immunohematology, blood component manufacturing, and transfusion medicine.

​

  • Function as managers, educators, researchers, or technical consultants.

​

  • Participate as part of the health care team in providing quality health services to patients.
